Chapter 3

When I get home, I take a quick shower, make a huge pot of coffee, then grab my laptop to email Karl and tell him about my dead phone so he doesn’t worry himself into getting an ulcer if he tries to call and I don’t pick up. And when I open my email program, it’s there.

A new email, from sender Viggo Moberg, with the subject line “As promised.”

I lean back, take a sip of my coffee, read his name on my screen over and over again between sips as a smile spreads on my face. I expected him to keep his word—his interest was unmistakable—but I didn’t expect him to do it so quickly. The time stamp on the message tells me he probably wrote it at the rest stop before heading back to the cabin, something that makes my smile even wider. By now, I’m probably grinning like a loon.

I finish my coffee before opening his email, not because I worry about what it says, but because I like the anticipation tickling low in my belly. Anticipation over what he’s written and over whatever’s going on between us. I’ve experienced instant attraction before, but never this strong, and never with a promise of more. Never with someone whose personality is equally attractive.

I even email my brother before opening Viggo’s message. A short, succinct, “My phone is broken so email me if you want to talk. I’ll call you when it’s sorted.” I refill my coffee, then I can’t wait any longer.

As promised, here are my contact details. I’m not someone who obsessively checks my email or phone messages, just so you know if it takes me a while to get back to you. I’m easiest to reach the old-fashioned way: by calling. Bear that in mind when you have a working phone again.

I enjoyed meeting you today, and I’m definitely up for that dinner we talked about. Let me know when you’re free so we can set something up.

All the best,

Viggo

Like an infatuated teenager, I reread his email a couple more times, finish my second cup of coffee, and smile a little more before hitting REPLY.

I’ll keep that in mind. I’ll see if I can get my phone sorted tomorrow. I’ll check my work calendar for next week and get back to you.

I thought about you when I took a shower earlier :-)

MÃ¥ns

I rinse out my cup and go find my work phone; I would’ve given Viggo this number if it wasn’t for the strict policy of my employer to use it only for work calls. I have three missed calls from my boss—on a Saturday?—and an email that starts with “I’m sorry to have to bother you on the weekend but something has come up.”

The “something” turns out to be a crisis at one of our clients in the final stages of implementation, and we’re needed on site, so I’m going to have to travel Tuesday through Thursday.

“Dammit,” I mutter, knowing that will mean working tomorrow
